Texans Final Roster Cuts

The Texans finished off their final roster cuts with fourteen releases on Saturday.  Among the most interesting cuts were nose tackle Ricardo Mathews, guard Alex Kupper and EZ Nwachukwu.  The Texans decided to keep only eight offensive linemen, which resulted in Kupper’s release as well as fellow lineman James Ferentz.

It’s interesting that the Texans chose to keep only five receivers and I am of the firm belief that had they elected to keep six instead, that Nwachukwu would probably have been the lock for that sixth receiver position.  Ricardo Mathews joined the Texans in the offseason and had a relatively decent preseason.  However, the team decided to keep Louis Nix III, Tim Jamison and Jeoffrey Pagan in favor of Mathews.

The final cuts to reach the 53-man NFL mandated roster are below.

K Chris Boswell
TE Zach Potter
S Jawanza Starling
FB Toben Opurum
WR Travis Labhart
OT Mike Farrell
CB Brandon Harris
OLB Quentin Groves
WR Nwachukwu
WR Lacoltan Bester
G Alex Kupper
C James Ferentz
TE Anthony Denham
G Bronson Irwin
OT Matt Feiler
NT Ricardo Mathews
ILB Max Bullough
ILB Chris Young
OLB Chris McAllister
CB Marcus Williams
DE Keith Browner
DE Julius Warmsley

It is important to note that the Texans are certainly not done making roster adjustments prior to the regular season beginning next week.  Houston has first priority for all waiver claims and they are most likely going to be making more cuts in order to make room for additional players they bring in.
